OUR 50TH REUNION
Next Page
The reunion began on Friday night, June 12, 2009, with an informal gathering at the CanadInn for cocktails and appetizers.  Many of those on hand had not attended a reunion in the past so the challenge of recognizing each other was high.  It was amazing to watch as people arrived, collected their name tags which had their graduating senior picture and then see the double-takes as we all started to recognize each other.  Thank heavens for those pictures!

John Smith, shown right with Norm Sage, organized a tour of the Ralph Englestad Arena on Saturday morning and Bette Russell Sorlie, shown below with Barbara Hjelmstad McConnell,  organized a tour of Central High School in the afternoon.

Our class has many classmates married for over 40 years to other classmates from Central High who attended the reunion:

Bonnie Amble Pladson and Denny Pladson - 48 years
Vic Bachmeier and Patty Molsted Bachmeier - 48 years
Jerry Honea and Mary Kittle Honea (C60) - 42 years
Erick Johnson and Anita Larson Johnson - 44 years
Karen Lehr Benner and Buck Benner (C57) - 47 years
Henry Marynik and Gloria Sannes Marynik - 48 ½ years
Elaine Ruud Thorfinnson and Gary Thorfinnson (C58) - 50 years
Gary Sorenson and Suzanne McCreary (C58) - 47 years
Dick Sturgeon and Pam Ault Sturgeon (C60) - 46 years

SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2009 - the big event with cocktails, dinner and dancing to Kenny and the Classics, a fantastic local rock and roll band.  Duane Anderson (he'll always be Dewey to us) opened the program for the evening with a tribute and a toast

TO THE CLASS OF 59:

·        Two hundred and sixty-nine years ago Les Grande Fourches became an important trading post.
·        One hundred thirty nine years ago Grand Forks was founded.
·        One hundred twenty eight years ago Grand Forks became incorporated.
·        One hundred twenty seven years ago Grand Forks central was established.
·        One hundred twenty two years ago Grand Forks central graduated its first class… two persons.
·        Fifty years ago principal Lawrence Hanson presented 257 diplomas to the second largest graduating class ever at Central High School at the time…     the Class of 1959!

All of us are here because of yesterday , without a doub, yesterday! But today!  Love and sincerity bring us together again today!  The spirit of curiosity, concern, care and love of all , relating and binding us to each other in a very special way,is indeed here tonight.  Need proof?   Just glance about the room.  Everyone here has made a journey.  Whether from here, near, or from afar, the same journey, and for the same purpose, and for the same reasons, those mentioned and more importantly, to just be together once again!

And all of our memories continue to be cemented and kept because of
today ...for tomorrow!  Tomorrow!

Dewey Anderson
Fifty years ago we didn't think we were youngsters
Now fifty years later we don't think we're oldsters.
Fifty years ago we thought we knew everything
Now fifty years later we're still trying to learn more.
Fifty years ago we thought maybe someday we would be married, raise a family
Now fifty years later many of us are involved with helping raise grandkids.
Fifty years ago we were not aware of the mysteries that life was to bestow upon us,
Now fifty years later we search out our reading glasses (a pair of which we probably have in every room) and curiously entertain deep and greater concern about the next successful bowel movement ahead of where we cleverly placed the promises of Viagra or cialis!!
Fifty years ago we were graduating from high school
Now fifty years later we're graduating from work.
Fifty years ago we thought we would live forever,
Now fifty years later many of us are gone.

Fifty years ago we all began the trek that took us through our lives… our fates… and uncertainties… and we made it this far to be here this weekend - with - and for - each other, and we all deserve a special "recognition" diploma for that!  So, may I now offer that special "recognition" diploma to you in the form of this toast?

DAYS GRAY AND MAROON

to all of our classmates, present and not…
to all of our friends then - that we have not forgot'.
to all of the memories we lost due to pain…
to all of the happiness we recall once again.
I offer this toast to all of us dear…
with thanks to the lord for those of us here.
and when we are graced by meeting each other once more…
whether home at Central, or at Heaven's door…
we'll remember our days past - and together again so fine…
days gray and maroon…   to the class of 1959!
